We recently returned to a large residential property in Maidstone, Kent, to carry out extensive maintenance on a mature Leylandii Cypress hedge that Broadleaf Tree Surgery had worked on previously.

Our Previous Work
When we first attended the property four years ago, the hedge had become excessively tall and was beginning to dominate the garden. During that visit, we carefully reduced the height by approximately three metres, establishing a more manageable framework while maintaining the hedge’s health and appearance.
Returning Assessment & Maintenance
Returning four years later gave us the opportunity to assess how the hedge had responded to the previous reduction. Pleasingly, the majority of the hedge had regenerated well, producing dense, healthy growth. However, as is often the case with mature Leylandii, some sections had developed thinner areas and bare patches.
Rather than simply trimming everything uniformly, we took the time to assess each section individually, tailoring our approach to encourage the best possible long-term result.
Over the course of two days, our four-man team carefully reduced the hedge back to the previously established height while restoring a neat, formal appearance throughout. Great care was taken to protect the surrounding garden, including ornamental planting beds and lawn areas. Ground protection mats were used where necessary to prevent damage from machinery, and all operations were carried out with minimal disruption to the property.
Responsibly Managing Our Mess
The volume of arisings generated from a hedge of this size was considerable. All cuttings were processed efficiently on site, with larger material chipped and removed, leaving the garden clean and tidy at the end of each working day.
Final Results
The finished result transformed the appearance of the garden, restoring clean lines and improving light levels while retaining the hedge’s inherent privacy and screening benefits.
