TPO and Oak Tree Removal in Beckenham

Summary

The Broadleaf Tree Surgery team were called out to a private property in Beckenham to remove a tree with large, half-excavated roots and fungal bodies on the main stem. To get started, though, we first had to remove the Tree Preservation Order on it.

About the Project

Our client, the homeowner, had recently purchased this property—which includes an oak tree—and was worried about some decay at its base. The Broadleaf Tree Surgery team were more than happy to carry out a free site inspection to see whether there was a real issue.

During our inspection, we found two concerning things:

  • Large roots that have been excavated on one side of the root plate
  • Several fungal fruiting bodies on the tree’s main stem, signifying decay

This meant that the tree was in need of removal, but a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) prevented us from getting on with work straight away. Thankfully, with such clear signs of decay, we were able to appeal to the local authorities and get the TPO removed.

Our team were then able to begin work, exercising caution throughout because the tree was roadside and in close proximity to street lighting and other properties.

Because of the confined space we had to work in, we chose to section-dismantle the main canopy down to a point where we could then fell the main stem. Follow along with our process step-by-step in the gallery below.

When we were done, the client asked us to leave a large piece of the wood so they could make a house name out of it; a great way to keep the tree’s memory alive.

Our team performed well on this project, demonstrating excellent teamwork on a tight worksite.
